History of Digboi
The history of Digboi town dates back to the year 1869 when a group of people found that the legs of an elephant soaked in mud smelt somewhat like oil. And thereon started experimenting and research work and finally in the year 1889 a small oil establishment was started which was later enhanced to form a proper refinery in the year 1901. The name ‘Digboi’ was attained from the phrase ‘dig-boy-dig’ when the boys were asked to dig more to get oil.

Digboi is situated in Tinsukia district. It is located at 27° 23' North and 95° 38' east. It has an average elevation of 165 metres. As of 2001 India census Digboi had a population of 20,405. Male population is 54 % and female population is 46 %. The average literacy rate is 81 %. Male literacy is 85% and female literacy is 77 %.Economy of Digboi
